Please support us in preserving and re-presenting a unique relic of history!
It concerns the professional refurbishment of a wooden portal, the entrance area of a former sick barracks in the park of the New Hummelshain Castle.
Due to the constantly increasing number of sick people in the camps, the operations management of the “REIMAHG” decided to set up a company hospital in Hummelshain Castle in October 1944. Several barracks were built in the castle park for foreign workers. After the war, the castle and the barracks continued to be used by the youth work center set up here.
When the JWH was closed in 1992, the barracks remained unused, fell into disrepair and are scheduled to be demolished by the end of 2023. Some time ago, our support association “Walpersberg Memorial and Memorial” e.V., based in Kahla, (ww.walpersberg.de) was able to secure and dismantle a wooden, glass-paned entrance portal to a barrack in order to rebuild it after its restoration in the cemetery of honor in Hummelshain and to present an exhibition on the history of the castle in 1944/45.
We have completed all the preliminary restoration work, now the portal needs to be professionally refurbished by a carpenter’s shop.
With your help, we can successfully complete this unique history project. The plan is for it to be set up in the cemetery of honor by the memorial service in May 2024; the concrete floor slabs have already been laid.
