A team of students from the 11th grade at Leuchtenburg Gymnasium/Kahla has been researching the fate of French forced laborers at the former REIMAHG plant for several weeks.
As part of the project, an excursion with the students took place on October 5th to the former factory in and on the Walpersberg and to the former Lager E, near Eichenberg.
It was a special honor for all of us that Ms. Günther, representative of the French Embassy for the Concours – “notre histoire – Bertrand Herz” also expressed her interest in taking part in this historical tour and we thus spent the day together.
The autumn weather was kind to us and we went to Walpersberg by bike. The students, Ms. Götz/teacher and Ms. Günther were very interested listeners with many questions, which we were happy to answer in a technically understandable and comprehensive manner using photos and documents.
The reason for the excursion was to provide the students with a better understanding of how to objectively deal with the history of the factory, the forced laborers, especially the camps in which the French were housed, in a visual and understandable way. We ended the day at the former Lager E, the camp with most of the Frenc forced laborers whose history was clearly explained using photos, plans and a site visit, as the former Lager E is part of the project. At the end, everyone respectfully placed a rose on the memorial stone of Camp E.
Many thanks to all participants!
